Carbondale, Ill. - Both Western Kentucky men's and women's swimming teams dropped their first meet of the season against Southern Illinois, Saturday. The women (11-1) dropped a close 156-142 decision, ending their dual meet winning streak at 32, while the men (11-1) saw their 42 meet winning streak end in a 178-112 decision.
The women were led by Brandi Beckwith-Carey (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) who picked up wins in the 100-meter backstroke (57.91), 200-meter backstroke (2:04.59) and 200 Individual Medley (2:08.20). Megan Zerhusen (Jr., Georgetown, Ky.) also won multiple event, capturing the 50 Freestyle (24.90) and 100 Freestyle (53.48).
In the men's meet, SIU captured all 16 races en route to the win. Dean Cheek (Fr., Hornchurch, England) finished second in both the 1000 Freestyle (9:41.57) and 500 Freestyle (4:42.93) to lead the Hilltoppers.
Both teams will compete at Evansville this Saturday (Jan. 27). The men will host one more dual meet against Georgia Tech on Feb. 3.
