Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky men's and women's swimming and diving teams improved their records to a perfect 11-0 on the season after defeating Wright State Saturday afternoon. The men won their meet with the Raiders 112-81 while the women continued their winning ways with a 124-102.5 victory. The victories over the weekend move the men's current winning streak to 42 meets while the women have won 32 straight contests.
The Lady Toppers were succesful early as Julia VanAntwerp won the 1650 freestyle (18:21.72). VanAntwerp also notched a victory for WKU in the 200 individual medley (2:12.26). Sydney Mountford also collected victories for the Lady Toppers with a win in the 200 freestyle (1:50.45) and in the 500 freestyle (4:55.32). Also winning for the Lady Toppers was Brandi Carey in the 50 freestyle (24.76) and the 100 freestyle (52.41). Western sealed the victory by winning the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:57.25.
The men were led by freshman Dean Cheek who won the 1650 freestyle (16:14.25). Jay Smith continued the Toppers winning ways when he won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.67 and David Tucker captured the 50 freestyle by posting a time of 20.99 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.87. Also winning for the Toppers was Kyle Nunez in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.19, Ryan Crosby in the 100 butterfly (51.26) and Brent Foland in the 100 backstroke (53.41).
"Our teams continue to work hard and improve each outing," head coach Bill Powell said. "We really had great swims from both teams this weekend, and it was great to perform well in front of the home crowd."
Both the men and women will put their perfect 11-0 records, along with 42 (men) and 32 (women) dual meet winning steaks, on the line this weekend when they compete against Southern Illinois on Saturday, December 20, at 1 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
