RENO, Nev. – WKU Football lost in the 2026 season opener to Nevada 49-14 on Saturday at Mackay Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nevada got on the board first with a 72-yard touchdown run on the first possession of the game to go ahead 7-0.
- The Wolf Pack added another touchdown with 2:17 to play in the opening quarter, capping off an 11-play, 88-yard drive with an 8-yard run.
- The Hilltoppers scored their first touchdown of the season with 5:20 to play in the first half. Ajay Allen scored the first touchdown of his WKU career on a 4-yard run to cap off a 13-play, 80-yard drive to make it a 14-7 game.
- Nevada added another touchdown with 2:21 left in the second quarter on a 20-yard run and took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
- The Wolf Pack added to their lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass on their first possession of the second half, making it 28-7.
- Nevada scored on a 14-yard pass with 4:03 left in the third quarter to make it 35-7.
- The Wolf Pack added two 1-yard rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 49-7.
- WKU scored late with 1:18 remaining. Allen rushed for his second touchdown of the night with a 10-yard run to finish off a 12-play, 75-yard drive to make the final score 49-14.
NOTABLES
- WKU falls to 0-1 with the loss.
- WKU's team captains for the game were Cameron Flowers, Jordan Donald and Dave Herard.
- Announced attendance at Mackay Stadium was 19,404.
- The Hilltoppers had 367 yards of offense in the game – 203 passing and 164 rushing.
- Ajay Allen rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries in his Hilltopper debut. It is the first time a WKU player has had at least 20-plus rushing attempts in a single game since Elijah Young rushed 23 times against Sam Houston in the 2024 season. It is the first time a a WKU player has rushed for 100 yards in a game since La'Vell Wright rushed for 116 yards on Nov. 29, 2025, at Jax State. It is also the first time a Hilltopper has rushed for two touchdowns in a single game since Wright did so at Jax State in 2025.
- Eight different WKU players caught passes in the game, and seven had multiple receptions.
- Cameron Flowers led all WKU players with seven receptions for 60 yards. The seven receptions set a career high for Flowers, surpassing his five receptions at Delaware on Oct. 3, 2025. The 60 yards receiving are also a career high.
- Jonathan Stafford Jr. caught five passes for 48 yards. It was the first time a WKU true freshman caught at least five passes in his collegiate debut since Marvis Parrish caught six passes for 58 yards and a touchdown against Sam Houston on Aug. 23, 2025. It was the first time a WKU true freshman receiver caught at least five passes in their collegiate debut since Dakota Thomas caught five passes for 78 yards at Charlotte on Dec. 6, 2020, and it was the second time during WKU's FBS Era.
- Fifteen Hilltoppers recorded multiple tackles in the game, led by six from Jaylen Lewis.
- Justin Brown's interception in the second quarter was the first of his career and the first of the season for the Hilltoppers.

- "All around, we just got defeated in every area tonight. First off, Nevada was a good football team. They executed extremely well. I thought they were a talented bunch, and for us to go win tonight, we needed to do it at a high level and do it right, and it was pretty obvious that we didn't do it right. The biggest things that stuck out on both sides of the ball – critical downs, third downs, couldn't get off the field, and then offensively, third-and-short, fourth-and-short, multiple times we can't make it and it puts our defense in a bad position.
