The Hilltoppers (3-6-1, 1-1-1 CUSA) scored both goals in the first half against UTEP (3-5-3, 0-2-1 CUSA) and held on in the second half to hold on to their shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
WKU's first goal of the match came in the 24th minute when Lily Rummo intercepted a UTEP pass, took off with the ball and launched a shot from just outside the 18-yard box as the Miner goalkeeper came out to try and block the shot. It was too late for the keeper as Rummo's shot found the back of the net.
Just before halftime, a WKU player had a great look at the goal but the UTEP keeper drew a red card after bumping the player. Olivia Cooke took the penalty kick for WKU and made good. The Miners played with 10 players for the rest of the match.
NOTABLES
- The shutout was Maddie Davis' third of the season and the 11th of her career. Her career mark is tied for the fourth most in program history (tied with Alexis Bach and Amy Uhlman). Davis ended the match with seven saves to preserve her clean sheet. Her 101 career saves are now sixth in WKU history.
- Lily Rummo's goal was the first of the season for the graduate student, but the sixth of her career. She becomes the seventh Hilltopper to score a goal this season.
- Olivia Cooke's goal was the second of the year for her and the fifth of her career. She is tied with two other WKU players for the second most goals on the team in 2024.
- WKU is now 4-3-1 against UTEP all-time and 2-1-1 in El Paso against the Miners.
