BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Women's Tennis claimed its fifth consecutive win by defeating Eastern Illinois 7-0 on Sunday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
The Lady Toppers improve to 7-1 at home and 8-5 overall with the victory.
"I thought we played really well today," WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said. "I liked that we were decisive and we were aggressive on every court. We seem to play well at home and we have all year.
"Now, the big test will be going on the road the next three matches and playing Dayton – which is the best Dayton team I've played against since I've been here, so we know we're going to have our hands full there – and then going on the road during spring break as well playing UAB and Samford. That's going to be very difficult. We've struggled with both of those teams in the past and they're very talented this year – both those programs are. The next three matches are going to be a huge test for us, but we're looking forward to the challenge on spring break."
WKU opened the match against EIU (0-15) by claiming the doubles point. Samantha Martinez and Mariana Zegada defeated Charleigh Fay and Emma Pilipovic-Kljajic 6-1 on the third court, and Paola Cortez and Anna-Marie Kopecka defeated Jemma Booth and Addison Brown 6-1 in No. 1 doubles to give the Lady Toppers the early lead in the match. Rachel Hermanova and Sofia Blanco led Luisa Renovales Salazar and Aleyla Wooten 3-2 when the doubles point was decided.
In singles, Cortez defeated Brown 6-0, 6-1; Hermanova defeated Booth 6-0, 6-2; Blanco defeated Wooten 6-3, 6-2; Kopecka defeated Fay 6-2, 6-0; Sunskrithi Damera defeated Renovales Salazar 6-1, 6-0; and Zegada defeated Plipovic-Kljajic 6-0, 6-0.
"(It feels) really good," Zegada said. "All of us, we're giving great effort every day on the court in practice. We're trying to do the things right and I think it's paying off. That feels really good, especially winning at home with our own people."
WKU's next match will come on the road at Dayton on Saturday, March 16. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CT.
