BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Women's Tennis fell 4-3 in a close match with Western Carolina on Sunday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanan Park.
"I thought coming in the doubles point was going to be huge for us because Western Carolina is just a really good team," WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said. "I thought that was going to be really important for us to get the doubles point to win this thing. We fought until the end and we had some opportunities there in doubles and it got away from us, and singles, but they're a good team.
" … We fought until the end, we put ourselves in position, and it's just getting that confidence, getting over that hump in that one match, but again, we played a really good team today. They didn't sneak up on us. We knew they were going to be good. It came down to the last match and we had opportunities, but next week's not going to be any easier, so we'll look forward to hosting Southeast Missouri on Friday."
The match was even at 3-3, but the Catamounts (2-1) got the best of the Lady Toppers (1-2) on court No. 3 to take the match.
WKU's Paola Cortez, Sofia Blanco, and Mariana Zegada each claimed singles victories on Sunday. Cortez defeated Isabella Sambola 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; Blanco defeated Angela Perez 6-0, 7-5; and Zegada defeated Dasha Osadova 6-1, 6-3. Blanco improves to 3-0 in singles matches this season, while Zegada is now 2-0 and Cortez is 2-1.
The Lady Toppers dropped the doubles point for the first time this season to start the match, but claimed a doubles win from the duo of Cortez and Anna-Marie Kopecka, 7-5.
WKU will be back in action at home on Friday, Feb. 2, with a 6 p.m. match against SEMO at the Warren County Tennis Facility.
"We've got two tough teams ahead of us this week with Southeast Missouri here. They've been in the NCAA Tournament quite a bit in recent years and they're going to be very difficult next Friday," Davis said. "Then we go on the road and play a Lipscomb team that's coming off big wins against UAB and some other teams. Our focus this week is just working to get better because both of those teams are going to be really good, just like Western Carolina was."
