BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Soccer celebrated another successful season at the annual banquet on Friday night held in the Harbaugh Club of Houchens-Smith Stadium.
The Lady Toppers enjoyed a 10-5-1 season in the fall, earning second place in the Conference USA East division with a 5-2-1 conference record. The WKU defense held opponents to just 13 goals for the second straight season. That mark is the second best in program history. The Lady Toppers' 0.834 goals against average was the 46th best nationally as well.
The group also celebrated individual success, highlighting all student-athletes who received awards for the 2021 season and gave out the team-voted awards.
Avery Jacobsen had a decorated season, bringing home All-C-USA first team and United Soccer Coaches All-Region second team honors. She also earned an academic award in United Soccer Coaches Academic All-Region second team.
Katie Erwin continued her rise started in the spring into the fall with All-C-USA third team and United Soccer Coaches All-Region third team honors. Erwin also added to her academic prowess with C-USA All-Academic first team, CoSIDA All-District and United Soccer Coaches Academic All-Region second team accolades.
Lyric Schmidt's stellar play on the backline was awarded with United Soccer Coaches All-Region third team honors. Brooke Sleeva had an impressive debut season with the Lady Toppers and was awarded with C-USA All-Freshmen Team honors.
Jacobsen was given the team's Most Valuable Player award at the banquet. Schmidt was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year for the Lady Toppers while Erwin was named the Offensive Player of the Year.
Lily Rummo was given the Most Improved Player award for her major strides made from her freshman to sophomore seasons. Ambere Barnett earned the ROTC Leadership award for her support of her teammates while sidelined with an injury. Isidora Pekez was given the Coaches' Award and the Alumni Spirit Award went to former assistant coach and current UC Merced head coach, Roman DuChateau.
WKU is currently in the midst of its spring season. The Lady Toppers will play a pair of matches on Saturday at the WKU Soccer Complex at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and then will host the Alumni Game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The spring slate will close out with matches on April 2 and 9.
