CHOUDRANT, La. – WKU Hilltopper Golf freshmen Stephen Warren and Riley Grindstaff had a strong collegiate debut in the first round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.
Both Warren and Grindstaff shot an even-par 72 to lead the squad on Sunday morning at the par-72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country Club. Both freshmen logged three birdies over the course of the round and are tied for 29th. They're only two strokes back from the top 10.
Junior Luke Fuller carded a 1-over 73 on the day with 14 pars. He is sitting t-41st, two strokes outside the top 20.
The Hilltoppers counted freshman Elliott Pope's 7-over 79 as their final score of the day. After the first round of his collegiate career, Pope is tied for 101st. Fifth year Jack Poole shot 8-over 80 on Sunday to finish out the lineup.
WKU sits tied for 15th out of 21 teams, with 119 golfers total out on the course. WKU as a group shot 8-over 296 to open the event.
The Hilltoppers will head back out on Monday morning for the second round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at 8:20 a.m. CT.
