Coach Gary Video Interview
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — After a strong fall that included a team victory and individual wins in 3 of 5 events, the WKU Lady Topper Golf team returns to the course for the spring this week at Jacksonville's Amelia Island Collegiate.
Â
The Lady Toppers will be 1 of 16 teams competing Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,029-yard Amelia National Golf Club.
Â
Teams will play two rounds Monday beginning at 7 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. The final round is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Â
"First tournament, we're just ready to get back into some nice weather and knock the rust off a little bit from not having any competition for a while, but the field's pretty strong," WKU head coach Adam Gary said. "Obviously, the home team, Jacksonville, is going to be a good team to compete against. We've got two in-conference teams we are going up against, UAB and Marshall, so that should be good to get a little bit of a feel where we stand kind of going into the spring and our conference season."
Â
Juniors Mary Joiner and Bailey Tyree, sophomore Megan Clarke, and freshmen Caroline Waldrop and Lizzie Loy will compete for the Lady Topper team. Junior Abigail Smee will participate as an individual.
Â
WKU earned three top-five team finishes in the fall, including a victory at the Boston Collegiate Intercollegiate. That was the sixth team title in Gary's five seasons at the helm.
Â
The Lady Toppers also notched individual wins in 3 of 5 events. Joiner won two tournaments, pushing her career total to a WKU- and C-USA record six victories, while Clarke closed the fall with her first win at the Little Rock Golf Classic.
Â
"The fall was fantastic," Gary said. "We had individuals win three out of the five tournaments, with Mary winning two and Megan closing the season out. Megan is kind of carrying that forward this spring. She was a low qualifier in the first four rounds that we had. … Hopefully we can just get the depth that we need to finish out those high finishes with the team."
