MIAMI, Fla. — In the 2017 season finale, WKU Baseball lost to FIU by a score of 11-2 on Saturday afternoon. Ben Morrison fired a scoreless of relief in the eighth inning, while Chris Rogers and Colie Currie both wrapped their campaigns with seven-game hit streaks.
The Panthers got two across in each of the first two innings against starter Paul Kirkpatrick to take a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Hilltoppers struck for a run when Currie doubled and scored on a two-out single by Hunter Wood. The catcher Wood (.313) and center fielder Currie (.311) ended the year as WKU's top two hitters in terms of batting average.
After four more runs by FIU in the bottom half of the third, Bryson Smith produced some fireworks two innings later. Leading off the fifth, the freshman third baseman hit his first career homerun over the "375" printed on the left-center field wall. With the dinger, Bryson became the 13th different Hilltopper with a long ball this year.
Three more runs in the seventh gave the Panthers a nine-run lead, but Michael Hicks stranded a runner on second in that inning and Morrison held another to third base in the eighth to keep it at that deficit.
