NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Two second-half goals by junior Bria Mosley pushed WKU past Belmont 3-0 to earn the team's third straight victory on Saturday evening at E.S. Rose Park.
WKU (6-3-0) held a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal against Belmont (1-4-3) and tied 4-4 in corner chances. Mosley led all players with three shots on the evening, while Belicia Mendiola and Emily Whitcomb each had a pair for the Bruins.
Allison Leone collected her third consecutive solo shutout of the season and 16th of her career, making three saves while playing the full 90 minutes for the Lady Toppers. Lily Herman also played the full match for Belmont, tallying six saves between the posts.
WKU has shut out three consecutive opponents, its most since tallying five consecutive shutouts during the 2013 campaign. Additionally, the Lady Toppers have held their opponents without a goal since the seventh minute against LSU on Sept. 8, a streak of 353 minutes.
The Lady Toppers started off strong as they had six shots in the first half opposed to Belmont's four. The second attempt of the night was set up by Iris Dunn who beat her defender and crossed the ball to the middle of the box, where Hannah Chua connected for her first goal of the season at the 5:51 mark.
WKU almost doubled its lead in the 23rd minute as Morris' initial shot was saved, but leading scorer Chandler Backes fired the rebound over the bar. Backes leads all players in C-USA with eight goals thus far in 2016.
At the 67:41 mark, Haley Baldridge played in a cross from the right side that fell right to the foot of Mosley, and the Conyers, Ga., native sent her shot into the lower left corner out of the reach of Herman to give the Lady Toppers a 2-0 advantage midway through the second half.
WKU added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to reach the final scoreline. Shayna Dheel created a one-on-one opportunity against Herman, waited patiently for her to close and sent a low pass to Mosley on the left side for the junior's second strike of the night.
Leone faced some pressure early in the match from the Belmont offensive attack. In the fifth minute, Mendiola beat her defender and shot a bullet right at Leone from 15 yards but the Kennesaw, Ga., native made a stand-up save on the attempt. Fifteen minutes later, Whitcomb challenged Leone with a header, but again Leone swallowed it up to preserve WKU's fourth shutout of the season.
WKU's next match will be against C-USA foe Southern Miss this Thursday, Sept. 22, in Bowling Green at 7 p.m. The Lady Toppers have played the Golden Eagles just once in program history and won the decision, 2-0, in Hattiesburg in 2014.
