Firestone Invitational First Day Results (PDF)
AKRON, Ohio — Sophomore Blake Smith fired the best round of his college career Monday, leading the WKU men's golf team through the first two rounds at Akron's Firestone Invitational.
Smith carded a 6-under 66 – including seven birdies – in the first round at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club-North Course. It bested his previous low round of 67 last season at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.
Smith followed it up with a 3-over 75 in the second round, tying him for 12th place individually with a two-round total of 141, which is also the lowest 36-hole tally of his career.
The Hilltoppers sit in 14th place as a team with a 591 (296-295) total. Illinois State leads the competition at 562.
WKU sophomore Stuart Easton is tied for 47th with a 148 (77-71) total, while junior Bryant Evans is tied for 54th at 149 (76-73). Easton's score is his best 36-hole start of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Billy Tom Sargent is tied for 74th at 154 (78-76), including an eagle on his final hole of the day. Redshirt senior Nick Thompson is tied for 83rd at 158 (77-81).
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. with tee times.
