BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-- After 14 game cancellations and a reschedule of its non-conference midweek game earlier this week, the WKU softball team (19-7, 6-2) split its home opener against Florida Atlantic (26-11-1, 7-4), taking the first game 3-1 before a 6-1 loss concluded Saturday.
For the day, Shawna Sadler hit a team-high .500 with two hits in four official at-bats while Dani Pugh and Larissa Franklin also notched a pair of hits each. In the circle, Miranda Kramer (13-4) earned the complete-game win, as all four pitchers had at least one strikeout, tabbing a total of 20 fanned batters.
WKU's homestand featured its Pink Out game, as fans donated over $300 that will be given to the American Cancer Society.
The squads return to the WKU Softball Complex for the rubber match on Sunday at noon CT. Live stats are available via WKUSports.com while in-game updates can be found on Twitter through @WKUSoftball. The game will also have free admission to those coming to the field.
GAME ONE--WKU 3, Florida Atlantic 1
WKU totaled eight hits in game one's victory, led by Sadler's two.
Brooke Holloway got the Lady Toppers started when she scored off of a Sadler hit in the bottom of the second inning. Sadler scored after a RBI by Carleigh Chaumont in the same inning. In the third, Franklin blasted a home run over centerfield to put WKU up 3-0.
Florida Atlantic scored its lone run in the sixth inning when Emily Lochten batted in Christina Martinez. Martinez was the only Florida Atlantic batter to not strike out at the hands of pitcher Kramer. Kramer recorded 13 strikeouts in the game after pitching all seven innings. The lefty gave up six hits while walking one.
GAME TWO--Florida Atlantic 6, WKU 1
Florida Atlantic pitcher Kylee Hanson had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings while keeping the WKU bats off-balanced with nine strikeouts, guiding the Owls to even the series.
A Preslie Cruce single with one out in the fifth broke up the no-no, as WKU's baserunners before the hit came from three walks. WKU found production in the seventh off of relief pitcher Tatum Buckley, as Dani Pugh led off with a home run. Holloway followed with a hit before a Sadler walk to start a rally, but a double play ended the threat. The Owls had back-to-back three-run innings in the fifth and sixth frames.
WKU put out three pitchers in the second game, starting with senior Janna Scheff. Scheff recorded four strikeouts and allowed three runs, none earned. Freshman Hannah Parker came in for the sixth inning and was then replaced by Kelsey Jernigan in the seventh. Parker struck out one batter with three hits allowed while Jernigan sat the Owls down in order, including two strikeouts looking.
