BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Two Marshall goals in the last 10 minutes of Friday night's game at the WKU Soccer Complex lift the Thundering Herd to a 2-0 win over WKU. The Lady Toppers fall to 8-5-4 on the season and 4-3-2 in conference play, while Marshall moves to 12-3-3 on the season and 5-2-2 in conference play.
The game remained scoreless at a back and forth pace for much of the game. The two teams seemed evenly matched and neither team would budge for the first 80 minutes. WKU outshot Marshall 15 to 10 in the game, but each team had only three shots on goal.
Marshall struck first with a goal from about 10 yards out, when Ashley Seltzer fired after a rebounded shot for her third goal this season. A little over three minutes later, Sydney Arnold scored an insurance goal for the Thundering Herd for her seventh score of the year. Arnold fired a shot within close range but keeper Allison Leone punched the ball out, unfortunately sending it right back to Arnold who poked the ball in from inside the box.
Caitlin Hesse led the Lady Toppers with four shots, two on frame. Hannah Chua, Lauren Moats, Iris Dunn and Hannah Cady each added two shots to the mix. Leone had one save on the night.
The clean sheet by the Marshall defense was only the third time this season that WKU has been shut out. It was only the sixth this season that the WKU defense has given up multiple goals.
Friday's game was a tiebreaker of sorts, with both teams knotted at third in the Conference USA standings with 14 points. Marshall moves to second place with the win.
WKU will close out the regular season on Thursday with Senior Night, honoring seniors Lauren Moats, Alanna Clancey and Chandler Clark. The Lady Toppers will take on Florida Atlantic (11-7-0, 5-3-0 C-USA) for the season closer at 7:00 PM at the WKU Soccer Complex.
