HUNTINGTON, W.V. - Coming off consecutive wins and a 5-2 non-conference showing, WKU Soccer begins its inaugural Conference USA schedule Saturday at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex when it heads east to face Marshall (3-3-2) at 6 p.m. (CT).
WKU is 23-22-13 against the current membership of Conference USA, with all but three of those matches coming against former Sun Belt Conference foes Florida Atlantic, FIU, Middle Tennessee and North Texas. In their only meeting with the Herd, the Lady Toppers blasted Marshall 4-1 at the Kentucky Tournament in Lexington during the 2009 season.
The Lady Toppers enter their first C-USA match ranked second with a .714 winning percentage, which is better than all league schools except LA Tech (.850). Junior forward Lauren Moats has provided the offensive spark so far this season, netting four goals and assisting on another for a team-high nine points. Moats is tied for the Conference USA lead with three-game winning goals, two of which have come in WKU's last two games.
Marshall finished its non-conference slate with a 3-3-2 mark, picking up wins over VMI, Eastern Illinois and Appalachian State. The Herd tested themselves with stiff competition leading up to league play, facing a pair of Top 5 teams in Virginia and Virginia Tech. Four different players have scored multiple goals for Marshall, led by Kristine Culicerto's five goals on 15 shots.
WKU freshman goalkeeper Allison Leone leads the league with a .878 save percentage and pitched four shutouts during non-conference play. The Lady Toppers have allowed five goals this season compared to Marshall's 13, but the Herd holds the goal advantage at 14-8.
Saturday's match will be streamed live on the Conference USA Digital Network ($$) and fans can also keep up with the match on social media by following @HerdWSoccer.
