Opening Statement
"We played as a team. Each person contributed and we went into the game not only knowing that we are going to play for the man the man upstairs but play for our family, play for ourselves and play for our teammates. They definitely did that."
"We talked about how we are going to make sure we play harder, how we are going to play tougher and play smarter than the opponent. We definitely stuck to that the entire game. Bowling Green is a good football team. They tried to come back but we found a way to score more points. Our defense held them when they needed to, so a great team effort."
On imagining a better first game
"No, I couldn't. Everything went extremely well. We wanted to take care of the quarterback, get completions for him, get him confidence, get the ball to our receivers out on the perimeter, not ask him to hold the ball a long time. He definitely did that early on. Then they started to move up a bit on us but we found ways to drop back and throw it up the field. He (Doughty) also, I think twice, made scrambles tonight and made good plays outside the pocket, which was an extremely great play by him. He definitely has improved his play. All of our guys played hard and they played well. I couldn't be happier with this first win."
On message to quarterback Brandon Doughty
"We always talk with Brandon. He knows what his weaknesses were and that was throwing interceptions and making plays with his feet. You can see right there, he didn't throw any interceptions and made plays with his feet. He definitely did a tremendous job there. He's an accurate passer and if you give him some plays where he can get the ball out of his hand, he's going to be accurate. If you can get him in a rhythm, get him some completions and let him get in a groove - that's his strength. That confidence just grows and grows."
"I told him he did a tremendous job and he knew that. He felt great about it. He has definitely become a great leader this summer. He has talked more, which even last year he wasn't the most talkative. I told him and all of our quarterbacks that part of being a leader is getting out of your comfort zone. You've got to do a little more than you really want to because people listen when you talk and when you're the quarterback, people need to hear what you have to say. He's worked on all the things we wanted him to and I couldn't be prouder of him."
On playing fast
"Well we didn't want to let the secret out of the bag too early. We told people we were practicing that way to get ready for Bowling Green, which we were, so there is truth to that. But at the same time we feel like nowadays that's the new thing in football: to go fast and go with a great tempo. Your players love playing that way. We practiced it all spring, all summer, all fall and our guys are in great condition. Our strength coach, coach (Justin) Lovett, has done a great job getting them in great shape. Our players love playing fast. They have the system down."
On running 97 plays and having no turnovers
"I couldn't be happier. A great coaching job by our coaches and a good job by our players. They just completely executed everything we called. They played hard the entire game, played together. They responded when the other team scored. Bowling Green scored, they got some things going. We responded. It was outstanding to see those guys do it."
On record breaking performance
Doughty: "I thought we executed. I thought we played Hilltopper Football and what we're supposed to be about this year. We really stressed the game plan this week and we came out and executed."
"I was kind of in this same type of situation last year at Kentucky. I got a little higher than I should have and came out and didn't play well at Tennessee. I'm not trying to get too high on it. I think I've matured in that way. I just need to stay level headed and take it one game at a time."
On Brandon Doughty's performance
Taylor: "He's a great quarterback. He is our leader and we expected him to do that. We expect him to do that week in, week out. He played great, the offense played great and the defense played great. It's what we expected to do: come in and win the day."
On fast-paced offense
Doughty: "It's really exciting. Coach Brohm has a niche for calling plays at certain times. You really have to understand what is going on, what they are trying to do to us and he's got a really good grasp on that."
On head coach Jeff Brohm's emotions after the game
Doughty: "He was excited - really, really excited. We had a little fun in the locker room. That's part of it. You have to enjoy the wins and take the losses to heart. That is what we are going to do. We are going to enjoy this tonight then tomorrow we are going to clear it out and work on Illinois."
On receivers making plays
Taylor: "Coach Shephard preaches on that a lot, about us being playmakers and taking pressure off the quarterback. When we get the ball in our hands everyone expects us to make plays and that's what we pride ourselves on: blocking, catching the football, doing great things and being great receivers."
On realizing the type of performance going on
Doughty: "I'll be honest I didn't really notice it until the fourth quarter. They were trying to tell me and I just didn't even want to know. I wanted to stay locked in and didn't want to get too high on it. I just tried to play my game and was in a really good rhythm early. Our offensive line doesn't get enough credit. Those guys were switching in and out and some of them played through injury tonight. They really stepped up and played how we expected them to play. You can't give those guys enough credit."
On running 97 plays with no turnovers
Taylor: "It shows how far we have come as an offense. It shows all the hard work we put in all summer, all spring. It all paid off tonight. We came in with one goal and that was to win. That's what we did. We executed, just like Coach Brohm said. We delivered the first blow and that's what we came in expecting to do."
