GULFPORT, Miss. -- Senior Keith Tooley, Jr., fired a two-under 70 on the day to help WKU improve their round score by 11 shots, finishing the second round with a three-over 291 to tie for fourth place on Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship.
WKU entered the day tied for sixth after firing a 302 in the first round and is currently tied for fourth with Texas State with a 593 (302-291) overall total. Texas State's score is bolstered by individual leader Stuart Smallwood who has fired consecutive four-under 68's the first two rounds.
"We're looking forward to a good round tomorrow - this was one of our better rounds of the spring," said head coach Phillip Hatchett. "I'm really proud of the rounds we had today, but we still left a lot of shots out on the golf course."
Including Tooley, a trio of Toppers are tied for 17th overall including Conor Griffiths (75-73) and Taylor Thompson (72-76) with a four-over 148.
Cameron Beal is currently tied for 31st with a six-over 150 (77-73) while Trey Aguirre is tied for 35th with a nine-over 153 (78-75). All totaled, four of the five golfers improved their scores between rounds as WKU fired the third lowest round of the day against the field.
Georgia State has fired identical even-par rounds of 288 to lead the way, two strokes ahead of UT-Arlington, with a 576 (288-288). Georgia State currently has three golfers in the top 10.
The team will take the course for the third and final round tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., at the par-72 Grand Bear Golf Course.
