IRVING, Texas - The Western Kentucky University swimming and diving team had two honorees earn end-of-the-year awards from Conference USA, as Nadine Laemmler earned Newcomer of the Year and Amy Crayne was named Freshman Diver of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.
Laemmler was the highest individual scorer for the Lady Toppers at the Conference USA Championship in February. The sophomore won the 100 back with a NCAA B-time of 53.68 and claimed a pair of third-place finishes, swimming the 200 back in 1:57.04 and the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.92.
The Germany native was named CSCAA Collegiate Classic D1 National Invite Female Swimmer of the Meet last month after winning three individual events. Laemmler set a new school record in each event, including the 100 back with a 53.13 performance, 200 back with a time of 1:55.36 and 200 IM after stopping the clock in 1:59.03.
Crayne earns Freshman Diver of the Year honors after setting numerous diving records and competing at the NCAA Zone Diving Championship.
She took bronze medalist honors in the one-meter dive at C-USA Championship. During the season she set a new school record with 297.60 points on the board. Crayne won the event in during the first four meets of season and holds the Bill Powell Natatorium record. The Rio Linda, Calif., native placed fifth in the platform dive at the C-USA Championship with a school-record 200.70 points. In three-meter diving, Crayne earned top honors at the first four meets of season and set the Bill Powell Natatorium Record.
Crayne is a four-time C-USA Diver of the Week honoree.
The women's swim team is in its first year with C-USA, joining as an affiliate member before WKU becomes a full-time member in July 2014.
