BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU tennis head coach Jeff True was inducted into the United States Tennis Association's Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame last Saturday in Louisville, Ky., becoming the fifth Hilltopper to receive the honor.
True joins Ted Hornback, who also coached at WKU, Ralph Dudgeon and Jackie Cooper, who both played for the Hilltoppers, and Henry Baughman, who served as a professor at the university, on the list of recipients.
True graduated from Indiana University where he played tennis for four years and was named to the All-Big 10 Tennis team in 1980. After graduating in 1981, True attended WKU and earned a Master's degree in Business Administration.
In 1982, True became the fifth head coach of the Hilltoppers and led them for eight seasons, including their transition into the Sun Belt Conference. True left WKU after the 1989 season, but not before coaching six individual Ohio Valley and Sun Belt conference champions.
True returned to WKU in 1995 and has remained as the Hilltoppers' coach since.
With 252 career wins in 27 seasons directing the men's team, True trails only Hornback in victories and seasons coached on the Hill.
In 2001, True took over as the sixth coach of the Lady Toppers. His 125 wins as the women's head coach top the charts in Lady Topper history.
