BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU only allowed one shot on goal in the first 66 minutes on Sunday's contest versus Memphis, but a goal-scoring header by Lady Tigers' forward Christabel Oduro in the 68th minute was the difference as WKU fell 0-1 at the WKU Soccer Complex.
Memphis (4-1-0) dictated the pace for the majority of the game but the Lady Topper defense didn't give the Lady Tigers many good looks at the goal, holding them to one shot on goal in the game's first 66 minutes. WKU goalkeeper Nora Abolins tallied four saves for the third time this season.
WKU had limited chances on offense but did fire three of six shots on goal, including a near-equalizer by Iris Dunn as time expired.
The Lady Toppers took all three of their corners in the final three minutes of the second half, and nearly netted a buzzer-beater after a nice service by freshman Haley Baldridge. Chrissy Tchoula got her head on Baldridge's corner and Dunn put a clean foot on a deflected ball in traffic, but Memphis goalkeeper Marys Bard-Martel was able to get a hand on the ball to force it over the crossbar as the horn sounded.
Senior Sydney Sisler had two solid shot attempts in the final 20 minutes of the first half, sending a header just wide off a Tchoula cross and missing just over the crossbar on a lob shot. She finished the game with a team-high three shots, one of which was on goal.
The loss dropped WKU to 1-2-2 on the season as the Lady Toppers closed out their five-game home stretch to open the season. WKU hits the road for the first time in 2013 this weekend, facing Western Carolina Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT) and Tennessee next Sunday at 1 p.m. in Knoxville, Tenn.
