WATCH: Iris Dunn Breaks Down Her Second Goal of the Season
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Led by a dominant defensive effort and goals by senior Torrie Lange and freshman Iris Dunn, the WKU soccer team started Sun Belt Conference action with a 2-0 victory over ULM (5-6-1) Friday night at the WKU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Toppers (3-3-4) dictated pace for the large majority of the 90-minute match and scored their fastest goal of the season when Lange netted her first goal of the season during the 16th minute. Lange's goal came after a corner kick in which sophomore Alanna Clancey corralled, dished to senior Chrissy Tchoula who then set up Lange with an easy shot from about five yards out.
It marked the second-straight game in which Tchoula tallied an assist as she now has 10 helpers in her career. The assist was Clancey's first of her career.
Junior Allie Auscherman set up WKU's second goal in the 57th minute, playing a nice ball down the right sideline to freshman Haley Baldridge. Baldridge controlled the pass, darted up the sideline and served the ball into the box to Dunn, who buried it in the back of the net with a header.
Baldridge's assist was the first of her career while Dunn's goal was her second on the season.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Nora Abolins recorded her third shutout of the season and 27th of her career. The Lady Topper backline held stiff throughout the game, not allowing a single shot on goal. The last time WKU held an opponent without a shot on goal was against Georgetown College on Aug. 31, 2007.
The Lady Toppers spread the wealth around offensively, as all six shots on goal were taken by six different players. In all, WKU outshot ULM 15-7, including a 6-0 mark on goal.
WKU continues Sun Belt play on Sunday when it hosts Louisiana-Lafayette at the WKU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. All Big Red's Rascals and Hilltopper Athletic Foundation members will be granted free admission by showing their membership cards at the ticket booth.
