BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU freshman Iris Dunn scored less than five minutes into Sunday's match against Louisiana-Lafayette (4-5-2) and fellow rookie Caitlin Hesse tacked on an insurance goal in the 78th minute to lead WKU past the Ragin' Cajuns 2-0 at the WKU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Toppers (4-3-4) needed just 4:54 to net the game-deciding goal as Dunn scored for the third time in the past four games courtesy of Chrissy Tchoula's assist. Tchoula, a senior midfielder, has now assisted in three-straight games.
Hesse notched her first-career goal late in the second half, finishing off senior Andrea Curry's pass in traffic with her left foot to give WKU a 2-0 lead. Curry's dish was set up by junior midfielder Allie Auscherman, who was also credited with an assist on the goal.
WKU controlled the game's tempo throughout, outshooting Louisiana-Lafayette 16-6 and limiting the Ragin' Cajuns to just three shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Nora Abolins tallied her fourth shutout of the season and 28th of her career, tallying three saves on the afternoon. Abolins hasn't allowed a goal in her last 288:02 between the posts.
With the win WKU improved to 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play to take sole possession of first place in league standings after a weekend of play. The Lady Toppers opened conference play with a pair of dominant performances over ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette, outscoring their rivals 4-0, outshooting them 31-13 and limiting them to just three shots on goal in a pair of shutout efforts.
