BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU Golf began spring play this week, completing play in the North Ranch Intercollegiate and 11th Annual USA Women's Invitational.
MEN'S GOLF: The Hilltoppers, paired with Arizona State and San Diego State, struggled in the wind during the last day of the North Ranch Invitational on Tuesday. Low scores for the Hilltoppers in the last round were freshman Nick Thompson and Trey Aquirre with 78 each. Followed by an 82 by Freshman Taylor Thompson, 83 by sophomore Nate Johnson and 84 by senior Will Beard. After a fast start to the season in 4th place after the first day of play the hilltoppers ended up 10 of the 12 teams teams competing.
"Over all I was please with our good play," said head coach Phillip Hatchett. "We were a little rusty on some aspects that we usually are not but a little more time and I believe we can polish our games to a point where we are competitive each time we tee it up.
"It is always important to give some of the younger players an opportunity to get in the game and once they qualified for the event, they earned that opportunity this week. It is not every week, we get to play against the strong west coast teams and I look forward to meeting them in competitions to come."
The WKU Men's golf teams next plays in the Appalachian State Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC over spring break. Qualifying will begin this Friday and the only exempt player is Nate Johnson as the low Hilltopper in California.
"We really appreciate all the support of our fans on twitter and we looking forward to giving them more to be proud of in the future.
WOMEN'S GOLF: WKU closed out the 11th Annual USA Women's Invitational in Mobile, Ala. finishing 12th. Sophomore April Butler finished in a tie for 30th to lead WKU after shooting 80-81 in the two-round, weather shortened event.
