OXFORD, Ohio - The Western Kentucky University diving team took a weekend away from the swim team to compete at the Miami (OH) Invite beginning last Thursday.
Competing against top collegiate teams along with the Chinese Junior National Team and the United State Junior National Team, WKU had to face its toughest competition this season.
One of the highlights of the weekend was sophomore Giorgi Meyer finishing seventh in the one-meter event. Meyer scored 282.60 after finishing the prelims in eighth with 268.10 points.
The team also got to compete in tower events, a first for many of the divers. Meyer posted the top WKU men's score at 259.85, good for seventh. The event was also a first for freshman Zach Batus, as the weekend was his first time competing the season. Batus put up 188.90 points. For the women, freshman Amy Crayne placed eighth with 178.65 points while Madison Rylee followed in 10th with a score of 147.25.
Crayne continued to have a strong showing on the one meter, as she finished 14th with 240.45 points. Rylee completed the evaluation with 200.60 points while Nicole Ares had 173.60. On the three meter, Rylee led the way with 220.85 to rank in the top 20. Alexandra Mata recorded 199.40 points while Rachel King had 186.95, as both finished in the top 30 of the event.
For the men's three-meter competition, Meyer placed 19th after scoring 249.75 while Batus was in the top 30 with 182.55.
WKU swim and dive resumes action in January during the team annual winter training trip when they face Florida Atlantic and Nova Southeastern on Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. CT.
