BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University swimming and diving kept a tight grip on Northwestern, but the Wildcats pulled away to take a pair of victories on Friday. The women were edged by NU 151-145 while the men fell 161-139.
The meet opened with Amy Crayne taking a pair of wins in the diving evaluations, as the freshman hit a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 282.15 in the three meter and a 257.65 in the one meter. Madison Rylee came in third on the three and one meter with scores of 249.52 and 236.30, respectively. Giorgi Meyer once again had another strong showing, taking second on both boards.
Out of the gates, WKU got off to a hot start with both 400 medley relays taking first, including the men's team of Seth Musser, TJ Bland, Heitor Rodrigues and Aymeric Le Corno setting a Bill Powell Natatorium record of 3:17.93.
Junior Claire Conlon swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:03.53 and 200 in 2:17.56. Senior Heitor Rodrigues took care of business in the 200 fly with a first-place time of 1:50.82 and 100 fly with a time of 1:49.25. S. Musser was a double winner with 1:50.13 in the 200 back and 1:52.23 in the 200 IM.
Newcomers Maggie Patterson and Celia Ouellette also found themselves with the fastest time in their respective events, as Patterson finished the 100 fly in 56.19 with Courtney Marx right behind in 57.66 while Ouellette won the 50 free in 23.56.
Heading into the final two events, the women held a 112-110 advantage over Northwestern, but despite winning the last 200 free relay with a pool-record time of 1:34.44, the team fell just short.
WKU is back in action on Saturday, November 9 at Cincinnati with the meet scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
