BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Senior forward Amanda Buechel (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Tuesday. It is her third honor of her career, a new WKU Soccer record.
It is the third Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honor for Buechel in her career, previously earning player of the week honors on Oct. 2, 2007 and Aug. 27, 2012. In addition, no player in program history had won the honor during two separate seasons prior to Buechel's selection earlier this year. She is one of three players in program history to win the honor multiple times as Kellie Walker (2009) and Mallory Outerbridge (2011) also claimed the honor on two occasions, but both in the same season.
Buechel is currently tied for the Sun Belt Conference lead with seven goals this season. She had three goals and an assist over the weekend as WKU opened the SBC schedule with two wins for the first time since 2007. Against Arkansas State, Buechel scored twice in the second half to lead WKU to the 2-0 win. Against UALR, Buechel assisted on the game-winning goal to open the game and scored the second goal for the game for the Lady Toppers.
Western Kentucky University (7-3-0, 2-0-0) returns to the field Friday in Boca Raton, Florida when the Lady Toppers face off against Florida Atlantic (3-6-0, 1-1-0) looking to extend their league-best three game winning streak.
WKU opened the conference schedule at home last weekend with a perfect 2-0 record, posting shutouts against Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock. WKU was the only team in the league to record two shutouts in the opening weekend of league play and one of four teams, including Florida International, that own a 2-0 record in the league.
Earlier this week, freshman goalkeeper Nikki Hall (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com. The WKU defense continues to post impressive numbers. The group has forced three straight shutouts and a league-high tying five on the season. Hall currently stands at third in the league in goals against average at 1.14
