WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - WKU Women's Golf shot under 300 in both rounds and finished fifth in the 14th annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate at a soggy Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa.
It was the highest finish for WKU in the event in program history (fifth) and second lowest overall score (596) for the team. WKU made it's 11th appearance in the event all-time. WKU had previously finished seventh on two prior occasions.
With a wet Monday and impending storms on Tuesday, the entire event was shifted to a one-day, 36-hole event mid-way through the day on Monday.
"I could not be prouder of the team for playing the way they did under these tough conditions today," said head coach Ron Burchett. "We found out during the back nine of our first round that we would be playing the second round later in the day because of the weather and the team responded by improving on their first round score by two strokes. I could not be prouder. They really gutted it out today."
Sophomore April Butler (Paducah, Ky.) finished 16th, tying her best career finish and posting her second career top 20 finish after shooting 147 (72-75). Butler finished in a tie for 16th place in the APSU Intercollegiate last season, shooting 151 (78-73). Butler and senior Kelsey Burrell both recorded an eagle during the event.
Freshman Michaela Bordeianu recorded her first career top 20 finish after shooting 148 (74-74) and finishing 19th.
Every WKU participant shot in the 70's in the soggy second round as the Lady Toppers shot under 300 in both rounds, marking the first time in the Ron Burchett era that WKU had multiple rounds under 300 in the same tournament.
WKU Women's Golf returns to the course next week when the team travels to Monroe, Louisiana for the ULM Fred Marx Invitational, hosted by Louisiana-Monroe. The event is scheduled for Sept. 23-25, the third of five fall tournaments for the team.
