Box Score (.pdf)
MUNCIE, Ind.- Senior Amanda Buechel (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored twice, including her 20th career goal, as WKU recorded a 2-1 win over Northern Kentucky University in the first ever meeting between the in-state foes. It was the Lady Toppers finale in the Ball State Tournament at the Briner Sports Complex on the Ball State University campus where the team finished 2-0.
Buechel became the sixth player in program history to record 20 career goals when she notched her second goal of the game in the 71st minute. Moments after an impressive save by NKU keeper Cassie Lingenhoel when Buechel nearly slipped a shot by the keeper in a one-on-one situation, Buechel found the right corner of the goal after attacking the from left.
Despite losing all-time leading scorer Mallory Outerbridge to graduation following the 2011 season, WKU (3-1) continues to find success in locating the back of the net. The Lady Toppers have scored in each of their first four games this season, the first time that has happened since 2008. The nine goals in the first four games of the season are the most since 2008 and the fourth most in program history through four games.
In the fifth minute, sophomore Allie Auscherman (Carmel, Ind.) located Buechel at the top of the keeper box, where she was able to place a ball in the top left corner of the net to give the Lady Toppers an early 1-0 lead.
The Lady Toppers outshot NKU 22-13, bringing WKU's total shot count for the weekend to 47 attempts.
Playing behind a strong defense, WKU freshman keeper Nikki Hall (Cincinnati, Ohio) played over 88 minutes without allowing a goal before NKU's Hannah Adams slipped a shot over the head of Hall and into the goal in the 89th minute to narrow the gap to 2-1.
The Lady Toppers return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 1 when they travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to face Bowling Green at 1:00pm in the Minnesota Tournament. The team faces host Minnesota on Sept. 3 at 1:00pm.
