BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Tennessee broke open a 1-1 tie with three additional first half goals to post a 4-1 win over Western Kentucky University on Sunday at the WKU Soccer Complex.
After Tennessee's Amy Harrison scored in the game's second minute, WKU's Lauren Moats (Nixa, Mo.) scored her first career goal in the sixth minute via a beautiful pass from the midfield line by junior Stephanie Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind.).
"We scored and had the flow of play for two or three minutes and then they scored again," said head coach Jason Neidell. "That put us on our heels again."
After the Lady Vols (2-0) answered with a goal in the ninth minute, the teams settled into the flow of the game before Tennessee found the back of the net in the 33rd and 42nd minute off a corner kick and free kick.
"We can't give up the goals on the set pieces," said Neidell. "That is something we will work on and get better at."
The loss came as the Lady Toppers were attempting to defeat their third different Southeastern Conference opponent in school history.
"I thought we were a bit timid in the first half," said Neidell. "It really set us back, our body language changed and our mentality changed. We were really dejected in the first half. The thing that changed in the second half, we made some tactical adjustments. But the big thing that changed was our mentality. We were alot stronger in the second half. Had we done that from the opening whistle, we would have been in really good shape today."
The Lady Toppers (1-1) return to the field next weekend when they travel to Muncie, Indiana for a pair of games in the Ball State Tournament against two first-time opponents. WKU will face Xavier on Friday, Aug. 24 at 3:00pm and Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Aug. 26 at noon.
WKU returns home on Sept. 9 when the Lady Toppers host Vanderbilt at 1:00pm. Single game tickets are available through the WKU Ticket Office by calling 270-745-5222 or 1-800-5-BIG-RED.
