LAFAYETTE, La. - Senior Amanda Buechel (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a goal in the 86th minute to tie the ballgame as WKU and Louisiana ended in a 1-1 tie at the Cajuns Track and Soccer Facility on the campus of the University of Louisiana.
Buechel recorded her eighth goal of the season when she controlled a punched ball by UL keeper Amanda Moorefield and found the back of the net. Buechel had four shots in the game, all on goal, including the game-tying goal.
Western Kentucky University (8-4-1, 3-1-1) is now unbeaten in its last 11 games against UL.
The Lady Toppers nearly had a goal early in the game when Christen Sims (Madison, Ala.) put a shot on goal after Moorefield came out of goal but a teammates raced in to save the goal. A rebounded shot by Sims hit the crossbar.
UL took the lead in the 32nd minute when Elizabeth Manuel dribbled up the right wing past the WKU defense and put a shot past WKU freshman keeper Nikki Hall (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Before Buechel tied the game, freshman Alanna Clancey (Carmel, Ind.) nearly had the equalizer on a goal nearly identical to the one that gave UL the early lead, but missed the mark.
WKU played its third consecutive overtime game, setting a new school record for consecutive games sent into overtime.
In the overtime periods, WKU got off four shots but were unable to get the winning goal as they had done a week earlier in a 1-0 win over FAU in Boca Raton.
WKU returns to the field on Sunday when the Lady Toppers conclude their four-game conference road swing at Louisiana-Monroe. First touch is set for 1:00pm CT at the ULM Soccer Complex in Monroe, La.
