BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-The Western Kentucky University swimming and diving team held its annual Red and White Meet on Saturday, as the White team slid by the Red team by a score of 295-265.
"I was pretty pleased with today's performances," WKU head coach Bruce Marchionda said. "We came off two weeks of very difficult training, and so I was expecting them to be very beat up, but we handled it pretty well. We had a couple of freshmen who went lifetime bests today, which obviously anytime you can go a lifetime best is great. That was very exciting to see.
"We packed a lot of events in a short period of time, and they didn't let that bother them very much. They took one race at a time, came up and were very competitive with each other. I thought we had some very good results today, so I'm pleased with where we are right before we go into the heart of our schedule."
Freshman Michelle Craddock set three personal-best times in the meet while winning the 100 and 200 free. "Michelle continues to do a great job for us, so we are excited about her future," said Marchionda. "I thought she did an outstanding job on the women's side."
Marchionda also praised senior Billy Kunkel for his performance, as he won the 50 breaststroke and the 50, 100 and 200 free, the most events won by an individual for the meet.
Junior Heitor Rodrigues, sophomore Allie Duff and sophomore Claire Conlon each recorded three wins while sophomore Susan Marquess, sophomore Loui Little and freshman Connor Dwyer each posted two first-place finishes.
"Freshmen Russ Bryant and Harry Griffin had some very nice races today as well, and they are starting to develop a little faster than anticipated, so that is a great thing," said Marchionda.
WKU is back in action this weekend, as the men's team travels to Chicago to face Northwestern and Illinois-Chicago on November 2 while the women go to Nashville on November 3 to compete against Vanderbilt and Tulane.
