MORGANTON, N.C. -- Western Kentucky University recorded an opening round of 326 to sit in 13th place after day one of the 2010 Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate on Monday. Elon (+17) leads the 15-team field, one stroke ahead of the host Western Carolina Catamounts. Senior Emily Wolff fired identical 40's on each nine to lead the Lady Toppers at eight-over-par.
The 36-hole event is being contested at the 5,869-yard, par 72 Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in Morganton, N.C. and hosted by WCU. Played in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains, the tournament is held on the beautiful 1928 Donald Ross designed course.
Appalachian State (+20) is third followed by William & Mary (+24) and Wofford (+25) rounding out the top five. WKU is 35-over-par, but just eight strokes out of sixth place in a field that features three of the nation's top 110 teams according to GolfStat.com.
Wofford's Sarah Hurt signed for an even-par 72 to lead the 78-player field following a three-under-par 33 on the back nine. Caroline Sweet of the College of William & Mary lurks one shot back at one-over-par.
Wolff, tied for 37th heading into the final 18 holes, positioned herself just three shots off a top 15 finish by playing the par threes at even-par, second best in the field, trailing only Hurt's two-under-par performance.
Freshman Dawn Wientjes and junior Jordan Magruder are one stroke back of Wolff in 43rd place following identical 81's. Magruder did her damage on the par fives, ranking second among all golfers at two-under-par, one stroke off Sweet's pace of three-under-par.
Freshmen Kelsey Burrell and Kristen Wilkinson each carded 84's and are tied for 59th at 12-over-par.
WKU, who finished ninth out of 10 team's at last year's tournament, will conclude play tomorrow beginning a 8:30 AM CT.
