BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - In the final game of series against FIU, the Lady Toppers could not overcome the Golden Panthers hot bats falling to FIU 8-0 in five innings. With the loss, WKU falls to 4-6 this season and 0-3 in the Sun Belt while FIU improves to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
FIU was the first to score in the game picking up one run in the first inning. The Golden Panthers scored their first run of two singles that scored Kayla Burri from third base. FIU then stretched their lead to four in the top of the fourth scoring another three runs off four hits, including a homerun by Laura Spiers.
The Golden Panthers continued their hard hitting in the top of the fifth inning scoring another four runs off five hits to take an 8-0 lead. In the inning, FIU posted four singles and one homerun, a two-run homerun, to right center field. WKU could not score a run in the game and posted just one hit in the five innings, a single by junior Brittney Perry in the first inning.
WKU also recorded one error in the game while FIU finished the day with 13 hits, including two homeruns, and one error. Freshman Mallorie Sulaski picked up the loss for the Lady Toppers after pitching 3.2 innings and giving up seven hits, four runs, two earned runs and striking out one. FIU's Kasey Barrett recorded the win for the Golden Panthers and improved to 6-1 this season.
WKU returns to action on March 5th when they head to Atlanta, Ga. to take part in the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic. On Friday, the Lady Toppers will face Akron at 3 p.m. CT before hitting the field at 5 p.m. for a contest against Jacksonville State.
