BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The first chance to see the 2009 Western Kentucky University Lady Topper soccer team in action comes Saturday at 7 p.m., when the squad hosts the Red & Gray Scrimmage at the Lovers Lane Soccer Complex. The scrimmage is free and open to the public.
The teams, which will be chosen via a captain’s draft, are scheduled to play two 45-minute halves. The Lovers Lane Soccer Complex is located at 385 Lovers Lane.
“We’re very excited for the upcoming season,” Lady Topper head coach Jason Neidell said. “Our team is anxious to get out there and start competing. It will be good to see how our newcomers will blend with our returning players.”
“We’re also eager to have the public come out and see what Lady Topper soccer is all about.”
The Lady Toppers are coming off a banner season in 2008. Four All-Sun Belt Conference First Team players, Rachel Friedman, Libby Stout, Morgan Thomas and Kellie Walker, return from a team that posted the best record in program history (15-2-4). These four players were also included on various all-region teams as awarded by Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA.
In addition, Stout was named a freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz, the first freshman All-American in program history.
Also returning to the squad in 2009 is forward Mallory Outerbridge, who redshirted in 2008 while competing with the Under-20 Canadian National Team. As a freshman in 2007, Outerbridge tied for the team lead in goals (8) and points (21).
The 2009 Lady Topper roster is bolstered by the addition of 11 newcomers, including 10 freshmen and one transfer player.
The Lady Toppers open the 2009 campaign on Saturday, August 15 with a 6 p.m. home exhibition match against Vanderbilt. The Lady Toppers begin the regular season at home on August 21 against Butler at 1 p.m.
