WKU alum Brent Long (‘04-06, ‘08), the 2006 Sun Belt Conference individual champion, took third place honors in the 2009 Powerbilt Kentucky Open played at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green this week.
Long completed the 54-hole event at 220 (76-69-75) trailing only tourney champ Matt Savage (211) and runner-up Keith Ohr (217), both of Louisville and both former Kentucky Open champions. Savage was the only player among the 71 athletes who made the cut to finish under par at -5 (67-75-69) on the rugged par 72 Olde Stone layout. Long and Savage were the only golfers in the field to shoot in the 60s in 213 rounds totaled by the players who made the cut. WKU hosted one of six NCAA regionals at Olde Stone back in May.
Joining Long in third place were Blake Watts and Justin Thomas.
Other former Hilltoppers who finished the tournament were Robie Crockett (‘97, ‘99-01), who tied for 31st at 230, and Jason Witten (‘00), who tied for 59th at 235.
A pro golfer, Savage earned $11,500 for his effort, while Long, who is also playing professionally, earned $4,420.
