BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped off a successful 2008-09 year by finishing the season ranked in the top six in the final collegeswimming.com Top 25 Mid-Major poll. The women's team finished the season ranked fourth while the men finished with a sixth place ranking.
The women's team captured their seventh overall Sun Belt Conference Championship title in 2009 and their second consecutive after tallying 851 points and finishing the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record. The Lady Toppers captured nine first place victories during the championships and nine second place finishes in the tournament. In the final collegeswimming.com poll, the Lady Toppers received 251.39 points behind Miami (Ohio), Harvard and Ohio University. During the season, the Lady Toppers broke five school records and sophomore Claire Donahue competed in the 2009 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
On the men's side, the Hilltoppers collected 244.23 points to fall behind Navy, Denver, Missouri State, Cornell and Oakland in the final poll. The 2008-09 men's team picked up a third place finish in the SBC Championships after racking up 1064.50 points. In the championships,WKU had one first place finish, two second place finishes and two third place finishes. In addition, WKU completed the regular season with a 7-1 mark. Junior Sean Penhale also competed in the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving championships after a successful season that included setting three new WKU school records. As a team, the Hilltoppers broke seven school records.
