Hot Springs, Ark. Western Kentucky University’s Lady Topper golfers played the first two rounds of the 54-hole UALR Women’s Golf Classic today and got off to a solid start, ranking 17th in the 21-team field through 18 holes and heading into the second round within reach of the top half of the standings.
But, the second trip around the 6,163-yard, par 72 layout at the Diamante Country Club was not kind to the Toppers, who fell nine strokes off their first round total (331), carding a 340 and falling to 21st on the board heading into tomorrow’s final 18 holes.
Florida International of the Sun Belt Conference posted a 301 the best team round of the day on the opening 18 and finished the day atop the leaderboard at 576, five strokes up on second place Central Arkansas (620). Host UALR is third at 623.
Stephany Fleet of Eastern Michigan (75-71) and Kelsey Kipp (70-76) of Missouri-Kansas City pace the field of 105 golfers tied at the top with two-over 146 totals for 36 holes. Kipp’s two-under 70 on the first 18 was the low round of the day.
Claire Costello led WKU (331-340 671) with her 157 total (77-80), which earned her a 24th place tie in the standings. Emily Wolff reported at 169 (82-87), Samantha Burke carded a 171 (87-84), Amy O’Connell was at 174 (85-89) and Brittani Beam finished the day with a 188 (95-93).
