Western Kentucky University’s Lady Topper Golf Team concluded play in its first tournament of the spring portion of the 2008-09 season this afternoon in the Samford Women’s Intercollegiate.
The Toppers played consistent golf over the 36 holes of the planned 54-hole event (weather forced the cancellation of the second 18 Monday), tallying a 675 (338-337) score and finishing in 14th place in the 15-team field.
Emily Wolff, a junior from Florence, Ky., paced the WKU women with her 155 tally (75-80) and tied for 12th place individually among the 79 competitors in the field. Rounding out the Topper lineup were Jordan Magruder (171), Kristi Beam (179), Samantha Burke (181) and Amy O’Connell (184).
Jacksonville State rallied on the final 18 today to overcome host Samford’s two-stroke advantage with a sharp 292 (the best team round in the tournament by an impressive 13 strokes). JSU’s 599 total easily outdistanced runner-up Samford by 15 shots (599-614).
However, Samford’s Katelyn followed up her 71 yesterday with a 75 today to finish at two-over 146 and take medalist honors, two strokes up on Lucia Fernandez (148 72-75) of Jacksonville State. JSU golfers Portia Abbott (77-72) and Ashley Cox (79-70) completed play in a two-way tie for third place. Cox’s two-under 70 on the par 72, 5,880-yard layout at Limestone Springs Golf Course today was the best round of the tournament.
The Lady Toppers return to action Monday and Tuesday, March 30 & 31, at the UALR Classic in Hot Springs, Ark.
