BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - In the first poll of the 2009 swimming and diving season, the WKU men's and women's swimming and diving teams are ranked in the top five in the Collegeswimming.com mid-major poll. The WKU men, who have already defeated Xavier and Cumberland this season, are ranked third in the mid-major poll while the women's team is ranked fourth. The WKU women have also had an impressive start to the season with wins over Cumberland, Xavier, Miami (FL) and a tie against Georgia Tech.
In the men's poll, the Hilltoppers picked up 216.3 points and trail Sun Belt rival Missouri State, who is ranked second with 216.6 points, and Navy, who is leading the way with 224.1. On the women's side, the Lady Toppers racked up 227.6 points and trail Miami (Ohio), Towson and top ranked Boston University. Miami (Ohio) picked up 232 points, Towson tallied 234.1 points and Boston University finished with 234.9 points.
Other Sun Belt teams ranked in the men's poll include, Denver in sixth place, New Orleans in ninth place, Miami (Ohio) in 13th place and Evansville in 23rd place. In the women's poll, Denver is ranked tenth and North Texas is ranked 15th. Miami( (Ohio) and Evansville swim in the Sun Belt Conference in men's competition.
The WKU swimming and diving teams will continue action this weekend when they host the Hilltopper Invite on Nov. 20-22. The Hilltopper Invite will feature Vanderbilt, Missouri-Rolla, Centre College, Marshall and the University of the Cumberlands.
