INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Behind an opening round 76 from junior Jordan Magruder, the Western Kentucky University Lady Toppers are tied for seventh in the 14-team field at the Butler Fall Invitational. WKU (+28) opened day one on Monday with a team total of 316, just nine shots back of round one pacesetter Eastern Illinois (+19).
The 36-hole event is being contested at the 6,197-yard, par 72 Eagle Creek Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind. and hosted by Butler University.
Indianapolis (+23) and IUPUI (+23) found themselves four shots back of the Panthers after round one while Western Illinois (+24) and Indiana State (+25) round out the top five.
Magruder, playing in her first tournament of the season, made the turn at one-over-par. Carding a 39 on the back side, the Louisville, Ky. native finished with a career-best-tying four-over-par 76. Currently tied for seventh, Magruder is gunning for her first career top 10.
Senior JoAnna Smith, also seeing her first action of 2009-10, is tied for 21st following an opening round of 79. Emily Wolff made the turn at three-over-par, finishing at eight-over-par on her round as the senior signed for an 80 and is tied for 33rd in the 87-player field.
Sophomore Amy O'Connell played the back nine the best among the Lady Toppers with a 38, finishing with an 81 and is tied for 40th with 18 holes to play. Freshman Kelsey Burrell sits tied for 54th after opening with an 84. Another freshman, Kristen Wilkinson, is competing as an individual for WKU and recorded an 82 on Monday and is tied for 43rd.
In the individual standings, Marian University's Angela Gauck fired a one-under-par 71 to lead the field as the only golfer to post red numbers on Monday. Gauck holds a one stroke advantage over Andrea Rosado of Chicago State and Wisconsin-Green Bay's Christina De Boer.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:00 AM ET.
