Bowling Green, Ky. On senior day, the WKU men's and women's swimming and diving teams easily took care of Evansville sweeping the Purple Aces.
In the 200 yard medley relay, the first event of the day, WKU took first place behind Stephanie Terrell, Brittany Doss, Claire Donahue and Jennifer Adams who touched the wall with a time of 1:46.14. The WKU men's team also took home first place with a time of 1:35.12 with the efforts of David Menchinger, Bryan Mell, Lukasz Herbst and Kyle Johnson.
The WKU women's team also posted top times in 14 other events. Krista Mantay started things off for the Lady Toppers by taking top honors in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:29.14. In event five, Kaitlyn Casper kept things going for WKU as she finished first in the 200 yard freestyle after posting a time of 1:56.32.
In the 100 yard backstroke, it was senior Jessica Aspinall who led the way recording a time of 59.04. Terrell made it a sweep for the Lady Toppers in the backstroke events in the 200 back with a time of 2:05.02 for first place.
In the freestyle events, WKU won the 200 free, the 50 free and the 100 free. In the 200 free, Casper finished with a time of 1:56.32 while Donahue captured first place in the 50 free with a time of 24.33. Adams posted a time of 52.75 to win the 100 free.
WKU also won the 100 breaststroke as Terrell won her third event of the day with a time of 1:07.76. Kara McCarthy also picked up a first place finish as she won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:27.34. In the women's 400 yard IM, Kate Sweeney posted the top time of the day recording a time of 4:33.25.
The Lady Toppers also captured top times in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events with Donahue recording a time of 55.27 in the 100 butterfly and Chelsea Larsen winning the 200 butterfly after a performance of 2:09.22.
On the men's side, WKU picked up top times in every event except one during the day. To kick things off for the Hilltoppers, Sean Shannon posted a winning time of 9:51.23 in the 1000 yard freestyle to take first place.
In the freestyle races, WKU's Mike Podbielski won the 200 free and 100 free with times of 1:42.64 and 46.93 respectively and
Kyle Johnson finished first in the 50 free after touching the wall in 21.37 seconds. Shannon posted the best time in the 500 free with a finish of 4:42.47.
Evansville took top honors in the 100 backstroke but WKU picked up second place in the event with a time of 53.07. WKU was able to rebound in the 200 back behind Menchinger who placed first after swimming a time of 1:56.16.
In the 100 butterfly, WKU's Menchinger and Cameron Watkins tied for the top time of the day and in the 200 butterfly Cameron Higdon had the best race finishing with a time of 1:53.57. The Hilltoppers picked up another top two finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Mell took top honors in the 100 breast with a time of 58.62 and Cameron Brown recorded a time of 2:10.08 for first. Higdon added another win to his resume in the 400 yard IM after posting a time of 4:09.36.
Finally, in the final events of the day, the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Lady Toppers and Hilltoppers finished the day on a high note. The Lady Topper team of Casper, Doss, Donahue and Claire Alexandre posted a time of 3:35.90 while the Hilltopper team of Mitch Miller, Kurt Greene, Johnson and Podbielski finished the race in 3:11.97.
In diving, the Lady Toppers were successful winning first and second place in the three meter dive. Emily Waits recorded 276.08 points while Erica Wilson posted a score of 227.40. In the men's one meter diving competition, WKU placed third, fourth and fifth. In the women's one meter dive WKU's Waits and Wilson also finished first and second with 254.25 and 225.22 points respectively. The Hilltoppers' Vincent Rominger placed second in the men's three meter dive with 249.15 points.
The WKU men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action at Southern Illinois next Saturday, Jan. 24. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. CST.
