The Lady Toppers’ record improved to 6-4 on the year (2-1 in SBC play) as the Trojans dropped to 2-7-1 on the season (1-2 in SBC action).
“Troy really frustrated us in the first half with some quality team defending,” head coach Jason Neidell said. “We regrouped at halftime and did a better job of attacking with urgency and numbers in the second half. I was very proud of our team for getting the shutout. We have a lot of confidence and momentum right now, and I know our players are eager to get back on the field Sunday against South Alabama.”
In the 37th minute, Alicia Dalby took a 20-yard shot that hit the post. Just a minute later, Dalby got a second chance as she took a corner kick that crossed the goal line — for her first goal of the season — to put WKU up 1-0 heading into intermission.
The Lady Toppers out shot the Trojans, 14-2, in the first 45 minutes of play.
Three minutes after halftime O’Shea received a pass from Morgan Thomas to put the Lady Toppers up 2-0.
Kim Wilkowski sent a pass to Thomas, who found O'Shea for her second score of the night, in the 58th minute. The goal put WKU on top 3-0, while O’Shea collected her fourth goal of the year.
O’Shea had several chances, after her second goal, to try and collect a hat trick. Her shot in the 58th minute went just above the goal and another shot in the 89th minute was saved by goalkeeper Jennifer Currie.
WKU out shot Troy 25-7 for the match with Dalby taking eight shots, O’Shea adding six attempts, and Thomas tallying four shots and two assists. Meredith Goodson earned her second shutout of the season in goal while making one save.
Brittany Stoltz and Alana Hawk added two shots each for Troy and goalkeepers’ Katy Kolb and Currie combined for seven saves.
The Lady Toppers return to action on Sunday (Oct. 1) against South Alabama. The match will take place at the WKU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. (CDT).
