Host Penn State captured the championship for the 13th time in the 14 year history of the event — firing a record-breaking 843 total. Maryland took second in team action with a 54-hole 861 total followed by last year’s winner Towson with a 866 total. Ohio was one stroke back in fourth place, while Virginia Commonwealth took fifth with a 868 total.
Maryland’s John Eades broke the 2003 individual record set by Hilltopper Robby Shaw with a three-round 200 (-16) total. Penn State’s Robert Rohanna (207) and Ted Neville (209) took second and third respectively, followed by Virginia Commonwealth’s Jens Fahrbring with a 210 total. Princeton’s Jason Gerken trailed by two strokes to capture fifth.
Western posted a three-round 915 total to place 14th in the 15-team field. Brent Long led the Toppers with a three-under-par 213 total — he finished sixth as an individual. Matthew Fuqua, Nick Johnston and Nate Fenlon also represented WKU.
The Rutherford Intercollegiate was the final tournament of the season for the men’s golf team. The team will be back in action next fall.
