The Hilltoppers started the day tied for fifth with Cal Poly after posting a 36-round total 585 on Thursday – 10 strokes behind leader San Diego.
San Diego took team champion honors after the fifth-man score of Bucky Coe, 76, bested the fifth-man score of St. Mary’s Chadd Cocco, 78. The Mustangs (288-297-291) finished two strokes back in third.
Cal State Bakersfield’s Greg Lopez posted a 70-67-73 (210) while Drake’s Matt Brooks carded a 72-71-67 (210) after three days of play, leaving them tied for first. In playoff action, Lopez took the win.
Only three strokes separated the top five. St. Marys’ Liam Kendregan finished one stroke back in third, while Loyola-Mar’s Jason D’Amore, 212, took fourth. Nic Van Vuuren of Utah Valley State carded a three-day total 213 to finish fifth.
WKU finished 16 in team action -16 strokes behind San Diego. Robby Shaw 71-76-76 (223) was the top score for Western, finishing the day tied for 21. Brent Long carded a third-round 82, which left him tied for 37 in the 105 man field.
Western will take next week off before returning to action in the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate April 4-5 in Shreveport, La.
