The Lady Toppers traveled to Murfreesboro, Tenn., this past weekend to play spring exhibition matches against East Tennessee State University and the Alabama Attack. WKU won both games, defeating ETSU 1-0 and the Alabama Attack 2-0.
“We showed a great effort defensively,” said Lady Topper head coach Jason Neidell. “We gave up very few opportunities near our goal. It was good to see our maturity and patience pay off today, particularly when we were having trouble scoring.”
Western also hosted the Big Red Classic II on March 6 at L.T. Smith Stadium. The seven-a-side tournament consisted of eight college and youth teams from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. Dynamo FC from Indianapolis claimed the championship, while WKU’s two teams earned second and third place. The Lady Topper teams combined to outscore their opponents 36-5 on the day.
“This tournament was a great learning experience for our team,” added Neidell. “Our players were reminded that they must stay focused and sharp all the time. We have talked a great deal about making sure to rely on our maturity and experience, something we lost sight of today. Still, I am thrilled to see how our thirteen original players are taking ownership and beginning to realize just how important their leadership and guidance will be for this team.”
The Lady Toppers will be back in action on Saturday, April 3 when they host Cincinnati and Valparaiso at 10 am and 2 pm at the Lover’s Lane Soccer Complex. WKU will conclude its spring season on April 17, again at Lover’s Lane. Admission to these games is free.
