The Lady Toppers gave up the first goal to the Pioneers late in the first period. Lleane Grimditch accepted a pass from Taryn Hemmings and kicked it in on the left side of the goal, just out of reach of freshman goal keep Meredith Goodson.
Western answered the goal in the 51st minute of the game, early in the second half. Sophomore Jenna Silverberg took the ball up the middle and blasted it over the head of the Pioneer goal keep for her eighth goal of the season. No more goals were scored until the 106th minute, in double overtime. The Pioneers were awarded a corner kick and they capitalized on the attempt. Maggie Kirchoff scored the game-winner off the corner kick to hand the Lady Toppers their third conference loss of the year.
Western was outshot 17-12 in the match and Denver fired nine more corner kicks than the Lady Toppers (12-3). Goodson came away with four saves for the WKU squad.
The Lady Toppers will take on Middle Tennessee Friday in Murfreesboro, Tenn., at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
