The loss dropped the Lady Toppers to 7-6 and 2-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, while UNT improved to 10-4 and 3-1 in the league.
The Mean Green wasted little time getting on the board as Heather Hutyra scored an unassisted breakaway goal in the 7th minute of play. Jamie Yates made it a 2-0 lead a minute later when her shot from 10 yards out found its way past WKU goalkeeper Meredith Goodson. The score remained the same until the 28th minute when Kristen Campbell scored from 25 yards out to give North Texas a 3-0 lead heading into intermission.
UNT added to its lead right out of the intermission as Elaine Bacchus found the back of the net in the 48th minute of play to make it a 4-0 match. That would be all the cushion the Mean Green needed as goalkeeper Briana Buchanan stopped all four WKU shots on goal during the match to pick up the shutout.
North Texas outshot Western 21-5 for the match, and put 10 shots on goal against WKU goalkeepers. Sophomore Kim Wilkowski — a native of Mesquite, Texas — led the Lady Toppers with two shots in her return to her home state.
The Lady Toppers will look to rebound on Sunday as they travel to Denver to take on the defending Sun Belt Conference champion Pioneers at 1 p.m. (CDT).
