Dublin, Ohio - Former Western Kentucky University standout Kenny Perry rode a 65 on the opening day of the Memorial Tournament to a 13-under par 275 total to earn a two-stroke victory over Lee Janzen and become the second player on the PGA Tour this season to win back-to-back events. One week removed from a record-setting performance at the Colonial, the Franklin, Ky., native went 65-68 over the first 36 holes and survived five bogeys over his last six holes for his sixth career win.
The win marked Perry's second victory at the Memorial, which he also claimed in 1991, and put him in some elite company, as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Hale Irwin are the only other multiple winners of the event. Perry, 42, became the oldest player to win consecutive events on the PGA Tour since Irwin did it in 1990 at the age of 45.
Perry's second win of the year, marking a personal best, pushed his season earnings to a career-high $2.5 million and moved him to No. 5 on the PGA Tour money list.
