Little Rock, Ark. - The Western Kentucky University women's swimming and diving team left the competition in its wake Friday with five first place finishes at the Sun Belt Conference Championships at Arkansas-Little Rock. The Lady Toppers head into the final day with 578.50 points - 137 more than second-place New Mexico State.
After finishing second in the 200 Medley Relay, the Lady Toppers went on to win five of the days other seven events. Meredith Mountjoy (Louisville, Ky.) got Western going by setting a Sun Belt Conference Championship and Westen Kentucky record with a time of 4:29.71 in the 400 IM. Brandi Carey had the previous school record with a time of 4:29.75 set Nov. 30, 2001. She was followed by teammates Amber Miller (Fr., Liberty Township, Ohio) and Penta Stanley (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.), who took second and third with season best times of 4:33.64 and 4:33.69, respectively. Carol Brown (Sr., Fortaleza-Ce, Brazil) kept WKU's winning ways going in the 100 Butterfly (58.23), while Alexis Rieck (Kitchener, Ontario) was third (59.18).
Junior Lucy Faria (Madison, Wis.) won the 100 Breastroke with a WKU season-best of 1:06.78. Western closed out the individual swimming events by taking the top two spots in the 100 Backstroke. Rieck and senior Deanne Thomas (Bowling Green, Ky.) In the first diving competiton of the meet, Western continued its domination. Sophomore Trisha Nailor (Angola, Ind.) won the 1-Meter with 260.45 points in the final. Junior Marci Kascir (Indianapolis, Ind.) was second with a score of 249.45.
The Championships conclude on Saturdaywith the preliminaries at 11 a.m. (CST) and the finals at 6 p.m.
