Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University head women's soccer coach Jason Neidell announced the addition of Matt Hawkey to the Lady Topper soccer staff for the 2002 season.
A native of Arvada, Colo., Hawkey experienced a brilliant career for the WKU men's soccer program from 1996-99. In 69 matches played, including 44 starts, he netted seven goals and recorded 15 assists. As a junior (1998), Hawkey finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference with nine assists and was named to the MVC All-Tournament Team. He drilled a career-high four goals and finished second on the squad with 13 points as a senior, earning All-Conference honors (1999).
"As a former player at Western Kentucky University, Matt brings tremendous recruiting insight into the college community," Neidell said. "We feel fortunate to bring another quality coach like Matt to join our staff, and his hiring is an important step in the future success of our women's soccer program."
Licensed by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), Hawkey also brings extensive coaching experience to the Hill. He's coached numerous local youth club teams, including the Wolves and SOKY of Bowling Green, and the Elgin Kickers in Chicago.
"I feel privileged to return to the Hill to continue my coaching career," Hawkey said. "The program has gotten off to a great start and I hope to help lead the team towards their goal of being a consistent top 25 performer."
